“Food is Medicine”

The "Food is Medicine"  initiative is a powerful approach to improving health outcomes by focusing on the role of nutrition in the prevention, management, and treatment of chronic conditions. Integrating this initiative into the 13 national programs of The Links, Incorporated, as well as our two national impact days—Walk for Healthy Living and Black Family Wellness Day—will empower communities to make informed choices about food and wellness. Below
are strategies for embedding this initiative into existing programs.

ï‚·Collaborate with local health professionals to provide nutrition workshops focused on
chronic disease prevention and the healing power of food across age demographics.

  • During the Walk for Healthy Living, create stations along the route that highlight nutritious foods that support heart health, diabetes management, and weight control. Incorporate interactive cooking demonstrations that emphasize "Food is Medicine"

  • As part of Fight Like a Link programming , explore and demonstrate the ways that nutritious food can impact cancer outcomes and healing of good, wholesome and nutritious foods.

  • Partner with local chefs and nutritionists to host a "Food is Medicine" cooking class for families, focusing on easy, affordable recipes that improve overall wellness and target conditions like hypertension and kidney disease.

  • Organize pop-up markets or food co-ops during the Walk for Healthy Living or Black Family Wellness Day, providing access to fresh produce and educating the community about the benefits of supporting local food systems.

  • Organize a Food as Medicine for Heart Health seminar where a registered dietitian and cardiologist demonstrate food choices that help prevent and manage heart disease,  diabetes, and hypertension.

  • Include sessions on how food can impact mental health, such as the role of omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants in reducing anxiety and depression.

  • Create senior-specific nutrition workshops that highlight foods that improve cognitive function, reduce inflammation, and support healthy aging.
