I READ, YOU READ, WE READ TOGETHER

In the wake of COVID-19, the urgency to accelerate literacy development for children of color has never been more critical. According to the New York Times, nearly two-thirds of American students are not reading at grade level—and those from historically marginalized communities have been disproportionately impacted. Pandemic-era disruptions deepened pre-existing disparities, leaving many children—especially those from low-income families—up to half a year behind in reading instruction.

Our Focus

The Southern Area is answering this crisis with a targeted, compassionate response:
We are intensifying our efforts to close the reading achievement gap by focusing on elementary-aged children, specifically third through fifth graders whose foundational learning years were most affected.
Chapters are encouraged to continue their valuable work across all grade levels, but this strategic shift underscores the critical window for reading intervention in upper elementary grades—where literacy skills transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.”

Strategic Alignment with National Initiatives

This area-wide focus is aligned with the LINKED UP National Mentoring Initiative, reinforcing the power of mentorship in driving academic and personal success. Through culturally responsive reading programs, one-on-one literacy support, and community-based initiatives, our members will walk alongside students as trusted literacy champions.

at the federal, state, and local levels. Additionally, voter apathy in the younger age

Research Data, more young adults, ages 18-30, did not vote in 2024 (30%) than in
2020 (25%).

Human trafficking is defined as the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person either for the purpose of a commercial sex act (sex trafficking) or labor of services (forced labor). There is no single common profile of a human trafficker or human trafficking victim.

THE EMERALD PLATE
Background:
Food insecurity is a symptom of a deeper social justice issue that is rooted in poverty caused by systemic barriers to accessing healthy, nutritious food. Food sovereignty is the right of people to healthy, culturally appropriate food produced through sustainable methods – and the right to define their own food and agriculture systems. It shifts the focus from corporate-driven food chains to people-centered systems that prioritize environmental, social, and economic sustainability.
Southern Area Focus:
In alignment with the national vision of NTS—to eliminate disparities by reducing barriers to services through advocacy, education, and service—the Southern Area is committed to raising awareness about food insecurity and its disproportionate impact on vulnerable populations. Through targeted education and outreach efforts, we will engage our communities to address the systemic barriers faced by BIPOC communities, HBCU students, low-income individuals, the unhoused, veterans, and other marginalized groups. Our goal is to empower communities with knowledge, advocate for equitable access to resources, and collaborate with partners to create sustainable solutions that ensure food security for all.
